WHAT - THE DARKNESS
Residence of the non-corporeal. Dark and cold with no cardinal reasoning. This was where Owen found himself after the car smacked him in the middle of the street. It was a primordial haze of collective consciousness. Yes. In the Darkness, he was not alone. The Darkness was a tumult of memories, voices, fear, loneliness, and confusion until he arrived. Then, for a breath, everything went silent.
Osiris has returned.
Standing with darkness all around him, the souls of the dead began to reach out to him begging for rest, for answers, for understanding. Order in the Darkness had long since fallen and souls were restless, weary, some wild and vengeful.
When the cries grew into a screeching roar, he woke up.
He woke up on a slab in the morgue.
A woman was there dressed in white, skin golden, and hair a long, black curtain around her shoulders. She introduced herself as the goddess who was Isis. "I am nothing like my former self," she informed him. None of them were. The gods. The world had changed and now worshiped new gods, and a god was nothing without its followers. However, one cannot kill a god of reincarnation or a god of death. He would only rise again.
Besides, Owen had a job to do. One Osiris left behind when he last fell.
"Go to the city of RavenBlack," she told him in a voice that echoed. "Leave this living world behind and walk among the dead. That is your world now. You can never return here to your home and family. Not when the world believes you are dead, as man and as god."
It was a difficult task. From the shadows, he watched his family mourn him. He watched people place flowers on the street where he was slain. He watched the police give up on the search for his body. He watched his empty casket be lowered into the ground.
Then, he left.
