"Beware; for I am fearless, and therefore powerful."
"Frankenstein" ; Mary Shelley ;

The sun beat down on the dry plains of New America, a territory in the middle of a brutal struggle from those who knew the land as that of their ancestors and those who invaded for opportunity. Overhead, vultures circled, willing the snorting horse and sweaty man to drop and provide nourishment. "Come on, girl," Marlo urged, ignoring the dry and painful crack of his lips when he spoke to the mare that trotted in circles around him in the pen. The day was long, only lengthened by the patience needed to break a wild horse, but still, Marlo persisted.

She snorted, eyes so wide he could practically only see the bright whites of fear and distrust, even as she started to still, stomping her front leg, digging her hoof in, and kicking dry dirt and dust behind her. She tossed her head but allowed him to finally approach her. Hours passed without her herd, hours in this tiny, wooden pen where a predator stalked her, put rope around her neck, and heavy tackle on her back. Now that she was tired, the saddle weighed more than anything she ever felt. Spit foamed out of her mouth, and they both knew she was too tired to fight, that she needed water and he knew where to find it.

"It's okay," he cooed, attempting to soothe her, his hands up towards her and his steps slow in approach. She tossed her head again, she snorted, she stamped her hoof, but she let him close enough to smell. Unlike her, there was no fear, but they shared the same sense and smell of desperation. "I bet you're thirsty, and hungry..." he whispered, finally making contact with her nose. His hand stretched up towards her eyes and forelock, gently scratching the center of her forehead. "You're alright, girl," he told her. "You're alright."

Old brick warehouses, office buildings, and a menagerie of small businesses gleamed in the moonlight, fresh with a recent rain. Heavy cowboy boots trudged through puddles with no regard for any of the slick that splashed back and coated the bottom rims. Up ahead, the bright, clean light of a still-open hospital waited as Marlo drew closer. He paused near the entrance to put his cigarette out on the bottom of a wet boot, disposing it in the correct receptacle just after. He rubbed his hand down his face, wiping away any debris or rain that still clung from his walk or any of the public transits he took on his journey. He scanned the surrounding area until he saw the man he meant to be meeting.

"Hey," the man said when he noticed Marlo approaching. "Right on time like you said you would be. I've got what you were asking for."

"Thanks," Marlo replied. "How much do I owe you, Kent?" he asked, already thumbing through his wallet for the proper bills that the humans of Ravenblack City used to pay for their lives. The coins of the seedy, underground vampires held no value in their society, not like they did at the hidden, traveling guilds and black market shops.

Kent held his hand out, hovering just over Marlo's, but respecting the space and boundary between them by not touching. "Actually," he mumbled, his eyes refusing to lift to meet Marlo's. "I was kind of hoping for some, uh, some of the coins." He let the last word linger and hang between them like a gunshot that rang out in Marlo's ears.

Marlo snapped his head up, eyebrows furrowed so deeply, that the lines and wrinkled skin between started to hurt. "What do you want that kind of trouble for? You're a good kid, don't be stupid."

"I can help, though!" Kent protested. "More than... more than this! There's more I can do if only I had some of your currency."

Marlo knew what Kent meant when he called the coins his. He shook his head, dug out more bills than he ever paid, and handed the wad of cash over. "You're risking your neck enough, in all ways. I don't think you understand what you're asking for," he muttered, snatching the bag out of Kent's hands, who now stood stunned, holding a thick clip of paper bills instead of the paper bag he arrived with.

"No, you're right. I have no idea. It was stupid," he said. "I have to get back to work. Same time next week?"

"I'll be here. You better be too. As you are, understand me? Don't go fooling around in things you don't understand. Now, get," Marlo gestured, urging Kent the nurse back to the warm glow of the hospital. After a pause, the human man did just that, leaving Marlo standing alone in the parking lot with his bag. Only when Kent was out of his sight did he open the bag and make sure all the blood he needed for the week was there.

The pleasant smell of cloves, cinnamon, and fresh fir clung to every fabric in the living room, permeated every fiber of the ranch house, only second to the tinkling laughter of children, the happy rumblings of adults, and the rich scent of a roasting bird in the oven. A new blanket of snow covered the fields outside, locking the warmth of the sun from the day in. Night came earlier in the winter nights, and though Christmas Eve wasn't quite the shortest day of the year, daylight was a commodity that no one at the Pace Family Ranch still clung to. Daylight or moonlight, they had it all, especially when they gathered as they did for the holidays.

"What did you get from Tara, Kit?" Marlo asked, unable to fight off the eternal smile plastered to his lips during times like these.

"A Barbie! She has a pony," the little girl declared proudly. "Like ours!"

"Rancher Barbie," Nora laughed from where she sat on Nick's lap, their arms entangled around each other, still holding onto the holiday drinks Jaida promised them she made up herself instead of using a recipe that year.

"She's kind of hot," John stated blatantly, earning a sharp look from more than just Marlo in the living room. "The Barbie. What! She's an adult. Rancher Barbie is hot," he added, only digging himself deeper.

"She's hot!" Kit agreed.

"Who's hot?" Jaida asked, emerging from the kitchen with Naomi. They carried drinks, appetizers, and all sorts of goodies, most of which were divvied up among the five children, all of who were circled near the tree and the many unopened presents.

"My Barbie!" Kit proclaimed, earning a laugh from the adults in the room, unlike when John suggested it.

"And she's smart, she's hard-working, she's independent," Jaida added, smudging her thumb over the corner of Kit's mouth where spots of cookie crumbs clung.

Marlo reached over to Tara, who came closer and lowered herself so they could hug and kiss each other's cheeks. "Thanks," he muttered, releasing her back to her place next to Sebastian. He glanced over at John, who was now trying to mitigate an argument with Toby, and swept his eyes over the rest of the guests, their family, until his eyes landed on Jaida, who was smiling down at him with her hands on her hips.

"Hey cowboy," she said. "Penny for your thoughts?" she asked, walking close enough for him to grab and pull her into his lap. She let out a full laugh but settled in against him easily.

"Hey firefly," he whispered back, kissing her jaw.
