I don't know if their powers really come from God and I don't care. Before that night, I had been bruised and battered a thousand times. Peers at school, the childer of my lover, and even my own parents. Against the holy foe, I finally understood the wolf not as some separate thing from my own soul, but as a part of me. With my life truly on the line, I gazed into the toothy maw of the abyss and found the measure of myself.

You are 27 years old.

I was 23 the first time I took a life. I have often wondered if I should have felt more than the thrill of the chase. Ending a life should not be an easy thing. But it turns out I sleep just fine. Better even, after each hunter that befalls my fangs.

The first was once my wife. It turns out not all of Inu's childer hold to the heart of the pack. I hold no ill will towards her; one can not love a brick wall, which is all I had become in my self-imposed exile. But it cements what I have known for years: everyone is unreliable.

I have not checked on them in years. A queer neurodivergent little girl never quite fit with their conservative Baptist values, despite the holy lessons they desperately tried to beat into me. They might as well be dead, though I am not cold enough to see that fate upon them myself. Yet.
